Planet Matching Activity:

This particular one I made about 4 years back and don't have the file saved on my current laptop. But it is easy to make on Word/Google Docs. You can create your own version! I laminated it so it could last longer and used velcro so the kids to match it accordingly. I have attached pictures below for reference. I had given this to my oldest when he was 3. He could make out the planets from the picture or the first letter from each word. You will need to do this with your child a couple times to get the hang of it but it is a great way for them to learn the order of the planets and get some word and visual recognition in as well!

I created a blank version of it so it can be used multiple times. I also laminated it so I could reuse the same game.

1) Think of a message you want your child to solve. It has be less than 25 letters long.

2) Assign a number to each letter. The number will be the solution to the problems you give your child.

3) In each blank box, write a problem (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division) depending on your child's age. Write the problems from left to right then go to the next row. Make sure your solution matches the alphabet in your message.

4) The child will solve each problem and find the alphabet associated with that solution. After writing it out, your child will know what the message was.

Example:

1) Message: Phone Home

2) p= 32, h=12 o=2 n=56 e=10 m=5

3) First row: 1st box: 30+2 = ; 2nd box: 6+6= ; 3rd box: 20-18= ; 4th box: 46+10= ; 5th box: 15-5=

Second row: 1st box: 15-3= ; 2nd box: 4-2= ; 3rd box: 2+3= ; 4th box: 8+2=

4) What is the Message?

I want to go home

Create your own or download the PDF above.

You can give different messages and problems for your child to solve. A great way to keep their interest to solve problems.

Tips to stay environmentally conscious:

-Use back of your old printouts/worksheets to print out the worksheets.

-If you are not planning on keeping it long-term or passing it along to others, do NOT laminate so it can be recycled.

-You can also use sheet protector for the worksheet so it can be recycled later when no longer needed.

*When your kids grow out of this activity, do NOT throw away! Pass it down to your family/friends or donate it to a local school/shelter.
